Who is Michael

Michael was born in Salt Lake City, Utah; he is the youngest of five children, father, Martinus Vuyk, mother, Mary Jane Barton Vuyk. Michael grew up in Salt Lake City. He was active in scouting earning his Eagle Scout Rank, and attended the Boy Scout National Jamboree in 1989 at Fort AP Hill, Virginia. Michael served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Louisiana and Portugal.

Michael is a graduate of Western Governor's University, with a Master's Degree in Business Administration, a Bachelor's of Marketing from the Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah, and an Associates of Business from Salt Lake Community College in 1997.

Michael met Candi in 1991 while dancing with his friends at the Palace in Provo, Utah. Michael and Candi dated until Michael left to serve his mission. When he returned, they continued their courtship until they were married in Salt Lake City in February 1995. They are privileged to have seven children, Porter, Dartanian, Kendell, Tighe, Ammon, Sophia, and Ellis.

Michael started his working career in 1999 with CitiFinancial as a loan representative. While helping individuals with their financial needs, he found it difficult to tell individuals they were getting the best value for their money. Having been a credit union member through the Salt Lake City Police Credit Union, he knew financing options existed outside traditional lenders and banks.

2000, Michael started working for Desert West Federal Credit Union (DWFCU) as their Marketing Director. While DWFCU was small at 10 million in assets, they managed accounts in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. In 2002 Desert West became a division of Mountain America Credit Union. Michael moved into a marketing department and managed the duties related to Desert West; this included opening branches in Arizona and New Mexico. Additional responsibilities included database management, direct mail, and digital signage.

2004 Michael moved from Utah to work for Liberty Check Printers, a national check printing and marketing company in Minnesota. This role included creating strategic marketing plans for credit unions in Minnesota, Maine, and Wyoming. Liberty was purchased in 2005 by Harland Clark, a merger that changed Michael's role from a strategic marketing specialist to a digital channel specialist focused on building an email delivery tool. While this channel was short-lived, the skills learned help propel him to take on a new challenge.

2006, Michael accepted the Vice President of Marketing with Western Vista Credit Union (WVCU) and relocated to Cheyenne, Wyoming. WVCU grew from 86 Million to 100 Million in assets during his time. Significant accomplishments included managing website vendors, rolling out two versions of the credit union's website, helping to bring electronic statements to the credit union, providing members with both a reward checking and credit card program.

2016, Michael took a risk and branched outside of the financial world, taking a position with WATCO as Market and Sales Representative for the Wyoming short line railroad located at Swan Ranch Business Park. The challenge of learning a new industry was exciting and provided the opportunity to work with chemical, manufacturing, and distribution companies. While this opportunity did not work out, the reward came from new hobbies, friendships, and passions experienced while working for WATCO.

2017, Michael went to work with the State of Wyoming in their Enterprise Technology Services Department as the Communication Officer. Duties included managing the ETS website, working with vendors and sponsors on the broadband events in 2017 and 2018. Change in Leadership at both the state and ETS allowed Michael to become an instructor for the States Google Platform.

2018, a former peer from ETS presented Michael with an opportunity, which matched his banking, finance, and fiscal management knowledge. While working for retirement is the goal of most people, actually working for The Wyoming Retirement System provided many new opportunities. These include printing and producing the Annual Summary Report, Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (CAFR), GASB 68 Report, managing the Retirement Systems Website, and reworking the distribution of statements to our 70 thousand members.

2022, brought change as a promotion for Candi took their family to Salt Lake City. With his wife's promotion it required leaving the Wyoming Retirement Sytem and seeking employement in Salt Lake.

2022, Michael Started working with the Finance and Records Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He has served as a volunteer in his Church, been a Scout Master, served as the Pinewood Derby Chair and Financial Chair for the BSA Longs Peak Council, Served as Co-Chair and Chair of the Armed Forces Day committee, and a board member on The Military Affairs Committee of the Cheyenne Chamber.

Michael has a deep-rooted passion for scouting, law enforcement, hunting, supporting the men and women of the military, his faith, and the United States of America. If you want to start a conversation, start talking about hunting either elk or pheasants,  four-wheeling in Utah, or why we are here.
